NHS
has been a 501c(3) nonprofit for 30 years, providing comprehensive services for first-time homebuyers
and existing homeowners through counseling, classroom
training, loan packaging, and construction management
services.
The mission of Neighborhood Housing Services is:
To
revitalize
New Orleans neighborhoods by increasing the number of
homeowners and reducing the number of substandard or
vacant houses through renovation into sustainable and
productive homeownership. In
addition to its citywide efforts, NHS will engage in
comprehensive community development within targeted
neighborhoods to improve the quality of life and promote
commercial redevelopment.
History:
NHS
was founded in 1976 as a private, non-profit housing
corporation. It was created in the belief
that a partnership between local residents, financial
institutions, businesses, and local government working
together can stop decline, promote reinvestment,
and restore pride and confidence in urban neighborhoods.
NHS employs a holistic approach to revitalization,
bringing lenders, government entities, and nonprofit
providers together to both reduce the number of
substandard and vacant houses in New Orleans and
increase home ownership opportunities for families
who might not normally qualify through traditional
methods. Although home ownership is the core
program through which NHS fulfills its mission,
neighborhood stabilization is also carried out with
commercial revitalization and by increasing the
involvement of residents, businesses, and schools
in their community.
In 1992, NHS joined the Neighborworks®
Campaign for Homeownership. NHS is the only
organization in New Orleans that provides FullCycle
lending, comprehensive programs to assist first-time
homebuyers and existing homeowners obtain financing
to create sustainable homeownership opportunites
city-wide.
Although homeownership services are offered city-wide,
the board has also targeted renaissance efforts
in four distinctive neighborhoods: Broadmoor,
Milan, Holy Ghost and Freret. We have developed
programs and strategies to meet the unique needs
of these neighborhoods.
The mission of our HomeOwnership Center is:
|
|
To
provide easy "one-stop" access to
a wide array of high quality products and
services needed by prospective homebuyers and
existing homeowners. |
|
|
To
create "customers for life" who utilize
the center both before and after a sale,
and who see the center as a cornerstone of their
community. |
|
|
To
employ a holistic "full-cycle" approach
to the
development of homebuyers
and sustainability of homeowners, resulting
in "default-resistant"
buyers who become proactive leaders for positive
change toward
strong and healthy neighborhoods. |
|
|
To
promote community involvement in and ownership
of the center through a
network of public and private partners who gain
significant social and economic
returns from investing in the community through
support for the center. |
|
|
To
strengthen New Orleans' neighborhoods by increasing
the number of homeowners
and decreasing the number of vacant and/or substandard
homes. |
As a full service center, NHS is staffed by experienced
professionals who understand the unique circumstances
of our local housing market, customers, financial
institutions, employers, insurers and other partners.
