HomeOwnership Center Services

NHS pre-qualification counseling determines how much a family can afford to borrow when buying or renovating a home. Our counselors review income, credit, employment history, and debt. We help develop a plan and provide on-going support to overcome any problems revealed during the counseling process. NHS staff provides a toolkit of services to help people explore homeownership.

Homebuyer Training

Homebuyer training classes take participants through the steps of becoming a homeowner. Every month, NHS staff and industry professionals teach the 12-hour class to demystify the home buying process.

Financial Fitness

Financial fitness classes provide basic financial management training with an emphasis on credit management and budgeting. The 12-hour class is offered monthly.

Financial Services

Once we have helped a family become mortgage-ready, we help them apply for a loan that best suits their needs. In some circumstances NHS has been able to provide down-payment or closing costs assistance or a low-interest loan as gap financing or for the renovation of a home. We help our customers access sources of funding such as "soft second" mortgage programs or Individual Development Account (IDAs).

Voucher Homeownership

Families who receive Section 8 rental vouchers are now able to purchase a home through the Voucher Homeownership program. The program uses the same funds that would otherwise subsidize a tenant's rent, only it applies those funds to a mortgage payment instead.

People Talk...
"The current crisis in the mortgage and credit market underscores the importance of NHS' work. NHS prepares families for sustainable homeownership by providing credit counseling and referring them to responsible lenders."
