Neighborhood Housing Services serves the Greater New Orleans region in a way that is wholly unique and critically important. We respond to pressing community issues of blighted property and disinvestment with a keen understanding that the best way to build up a neighborhood and make it vibrant is not to employ a distant, prescriptive approach, but to work as a partner in the neighborhood to enlist and empower the human assets the community already holds. We help children and adults resolve conflicts in a way that restores trust and accountability; and supports solutions developed on the community level. We also serve a paramount need in giving people the educational tools to build their own long-term wealth through homeownership, which helps stabilize their community one home at a time.

We have been serving the New Orleans area for over thirty years, with an impeccable reputation for trustworthiness and stewardship of resources. We are the only organization in the region that provides individual homeownership counseling and financial education courses, coupled with below-market rate lending; construction management and architectural design sevices; accompanied by neighborhood planning, organizing and advocacy.

We believe it's not enough to just build a sound home, or even to increase the rate of homeownership; instead, we build communities of engaged homeowners who take control of their destiny - financially, civically, and personally.

Internal mechanisms are in place to monitor and evaluate progress toward our goals; training opportunities through our national partner, NeighborWorks America, and others, help us develop best practices and remain open to innovation.

During the filming of the documentary series Architecture School on the Sundance Channel, I worked alongside of Lauren Anderson and Neighborhood Housing Services for about a year…[Their] personal commitment to New Orleans housing crisis is unyielding and inspirational..”
